The Manna Soup Kitchen
As a follow up activity from the Youth Off the Streets Sleep-out, our CAS coordinator, Miss Parr, gave us a chance to volunteer at the actual soup kitchen where the speaker who came to talk to us on the night of the sleep-out works at. We were able to volunteer on a Wednesday after lunch with the group of students who had helped organize the Youth Off the Streets Sleep-out. We were all assigned jobs as we arrived, but we mostly worked alongside some of our classmates. Along with a friend, I was assigned to scrub clean the potatoes while my fellow peer cut them into pieces. After that, we were split up and I was asked to cut herbs for the soup the were making, which I was happy to do. In total, we helped in the kitchen for about two hours, before returning back to school.
When reflecting back to that afternoon, the amount of food being prepared really made me realize how many people living in Perth, can not afford a decent warm meal everyday. What was very inspiring for me as well was the number of volunteers who volunteered in the kitchen on workdays in the evening despite having a full time job. Volunteering at the Manna soup kitchen, has given me a new perspective on how so little work can make so much of a difference on a person's life.

Learning Outcomes
Be engaged with issues of global importance.
I believe that a person is able to make a difference in the world, but to do so, they must work collaboratively with others and start somewhere. By doing this job in the community, it might have seemed like something on a small scale, yet preparing a meal for a group of people for one day really felt like an accomplishment and making a difference in someone else's life.
